A Note on Culture from Ashnelle: As you move through the city this month, and the rest of the summer, remember that the preliminary step to being truly cultured is simply being personable. Say hi to your neighbors, tip your bartenders, dap up your DJs, support the street vendors, and bring real authenticity over a curated social media aesthetic.

This past Saturday, I found myself back at Record Room in Long Island City for a friends birthday gathering. It was my third visit since they opened their hidden door on Center Blvd, and I’m impressed everytime. There is something deeply intentional about the way this space breathes, it’s a curated mood. From the sultry, amber-hued decor to the tactile warmth of the vinyl lining the walls, it feels like stepping into the living room of a friend with impeccable taste.

The highlight, as always, was the sound. Record Room is incredibly selective with their lineup, and this weekend was no exception with DJ Huggy Bear behind the decks. The set was a skillful display in reading the room; the all-vinyl selection kept the energy electric without losing that intimate feel. Between the expertly crafted cocktails and the premium sound system, it remains a staple for anyone who values “vibe” over volume. However, the secret is definitely out. Because the venue is cozy and intentionally small, it fills up fast. If you’re planning a visit, I highly recommend securing an RSVP or arriving early, otherwise, you might find yourself on the outside of a very tight guest list.

The Cons:

• Limited Real Estate: It’s an intimate venue. Once it’s at capacity, it can feel a bit tight, and the “no-standing” or “reservation-preferred” nature means entry isn’t guaranteed.

• The “Island” Factor: It’s situated in a bit of a localized pocket in LIC. Since it’s somewhat in the middle of nowhere relative to other nightlife hubs, there aren’t many “Plan B” spots within a quick walk if they are at capacity.

• Planning Required: This isn’t a “swing by on a whim” type of place on a Saturday night; you’ll want to be strategic with your RSVP.

Stepping into Sally’s BK on a Friday night is less like entering a restaurant and more like being enveloped in a perfectly curated atmosphere. This is the kind of place that understands the assignment: great food and an undeniable energy that makes you forget the week you just had.

The Vibe & The Sound

Sally’s feels intrinsically Brooklyn; cozy, stylish, and radiating a low-key cool that’s never trying too hard. The energy is buzzing; it’s lively and kinetic without being overwhelming, making it the ideal setting for deep conversation and good times with friends.

The cuisine itself is a beautiful mashup, rooted in modern American sensibilities but unafraid to dance with global, soulful flavors. Think elevated comfort food with unexpected twists, perfectly encapsulated by the menu’s adventurous spirit.

And the music? Simply amazing. It’s the silent (or rather, perfectly audible) architect of the evening. We’re talking deep cuts of R&B, soulful reggae, and grooves that provide a warm, head-nodding rhythm to your meal. It manages to be loud enough to feel like a cocktail hour, yet soft enough to allow for easy conversation.

The Experience & The Plate

A huge part of the incredible experience is the staff. From the moment I walked in, we were met with lovely, accommodating service that felt genuinely warm. It’s clear they take pride in what they do, ensuring every guest feels taken care of.

My choice for the evening was the SHRIMP BURGER, and honestly, it’s a revelation. The seasoned shrimp patty was cooked perfectly-tender inside, crisp outside-and perfectly complemented by the bright crunch of the carrot slaw and the juicy tomato. The spicy mayo delivered just the right amount of kick, making every bite complex and satisfying. Served alongside those signature jerk fries, which offer a smoky, perfectly spiced counterpoint, it was a flavor explosion.

Washing it down with a crisp glass of Prosecco was the right move; its bubbles cut through the richness of the burger and the heat of the fries beautifully.

To cap the night, we shared the unforgettable Ube sweet potato pie. That gorgeous purple hue hints at its earthy, sweet interior. It’s a delightful, comforting, and uniquely unexpected dessert that serves as the perfect final note to a flawless meal.

Sally’s BK is more than just a burger joint; it’s a Friday night destination. It’s where the food is vibrant, the service is stellar, and the playlist is worth stealing.

With expertly crafted drinks, a killer soundtrack, and an ambiance that feels like a warm embrace, Honeycomb Hi-Fi Lounge has all the makings of a perfect neighborhood bar. Nestled in Park Slope, Brooklyn, this isn’t just a place to grab a drink-it’s a hi-fi audio lounge designed for intimate, immersive experiences.

At first, I nearly walked past it because of its understated facade blending seamlessly into the block. But once I stepped inside, a wave of ease washed over me. The entrance, framed by an artful multicolored stained-glass window, gives way to a cozy, thoughtfully designed space.

What Honeycomb lacks in size, it more than makes up for in character. Every detail feels intentional. From the vintage light fixtures to the plush leather barstools (yes, with hooks for your bag!), the space oozes charm. At the end of the bar, a turntable spins vinyl from owner John Carlson’s personal collection, filling the room with rich, analog warmth. The lounge’s name takes inspiration from the acoustic paneling on the ceiling, designed to mimic a honeycomb, an aesthetic and functional choice that enhances the sound experience.

On weekends, resident DJs take over the decks ensuring an eclectic mix of sounds.

Now, if you’re anything like me, you judge a place not just by its drinks but by its bathroom situation. (Call it a quirk, but a well-maintained restroom speaks volumes.) I was pleasantly surprised to find a spacious and stylish setup which is rare for a bar of this size.

As for the drinks, Honeycomb’s menu balances classic cocktails and inventive house creations. You’ll find a Highball with Japanese whiskey, alongside standouts like the Infante (mezcal, tequila, orgeat, nutmeg, and lime) and the Super Bee (gin, black truffle honey, and lemon). Feeling overwhelmed? Stick to your go-to—I did. I started with a refreshing prosecco before moving on to my tried-and-true Moscow Mule- which, thankfully, was made properly with real ginger beer (because a Mule with ginger ale is just wrong).

Honeycomb Hi-Fi Lounge is a hidden gem with a soul, offering a blend of warmth, nostalgia, and community. Whether you're there for the music, the drinks, or simply the vibe, you’re in for a treat. Stop by 74 Fifth Avenue and experience it for yourself.

Whenever there’s an opportunity to gather with Black women for honest conversations that uplift and empower, count me in! The Black Beauty Club’s Black Beauty Talks provided just that- a space for meaningful dialogue, inspiration, and sisterhood- at The Times Center in New York City on February 18.

Founded by Tomi Talabi in 2020, The Black Beauty Club is more than just a platform, it’s a movement. This social enterprise is dedicated to building community, fostering cultural conversations across the Black diaspora, and amplifying thought leadership within the Black beauty industry.

As one of The Black Beauty Club’s many workshops and ongoing initiatives, Black Beauty Talks: Black Beauty as Legacy and Disruption was an evening of thought-provoking discussion and collective empowerment. The event tackled key issues such as economic disparities in the beauty industry, accessibility, and what it truly means to be disruptive in a space that often sidelines Black voices. The panel featured a lineup of trailblazing speakers, including:

• Beauty educator Eni Popoola, in conversation with Black Beauty Club influencer Mimi Sillah

• Makeup artist Raisa Flowers and nail artist Dawn Sterling, moderated by journalist Tahirah Hairston

• Beauty creator Simi Muhumuza, in conversation with rap icon JT

Each speaker brought a unique perspective, offering invaluable insights that left the audience feeling empowered and ready to take up space unapologetically. Here are some standout moments from the night:

The significance of this event being held during Black History Month was not lost on me. The Black Beauty Club isn’t just about celebrating beauty products—it’s about creating space for Black voices to be heard, challenging the industry’s status quo, and paving the way for the next generation. By speaking up and doing the work with pride, we ensure that those who come after us won’t have to fight the same battles.

With its unwavering commitment to championing Black women, The Black Beauty Club is a reminder that our role in shaping the beauty industry is undeniable and that role is, simply put, FAB.

Damballa is a new music bar located on the border of the Bushwick and Bed-Stuy serving enchanting drinks, surprising flavors, and lively sounds. This establishment is the goddess space to one of Brooklyn’s most integral spaces, Café Erzulie. With its official opening on January 24th, Damballa has started the year strong hosting a variety of events. From the natural wine party “Wine For Me” and the residential series“Keep Warm”.

“Keep Warm” is a bi-weekly gathering co-founded by creatives Giovanni Mourin and James Anderson that is already making waves in the community. Created to fight off seasonal depression, this event provides a reason to leave the house and keep warm by dancing to carefully curated soundtracks. From silky R&B to lively Brazillian Jazz, “Keep Warm” will get you through the cold winter months.

There is also a folklore that is tied to the Damballa name that speaks life into its foundation and walls. According to Haitian voodoo traditions, Damballa is one of the most powerful Loa/god spirits. “Known as the sky father, he is considered the primordial creator of all life. Often depicted as a black serpent, he is credited with forging the cosmos using his 7,000 coils to form the stars and planets into heavens.” He is also known as a romantic and is celebrated for being the lover of the goddess Erzulie, a Haitian Vodou Loa/ goddess of love, beauty, and sensuality.

As a music bar, this space has been intentionally developed to house a bespoke sound system developed by Automatic Audio, an audio company from Montréal, Québec. Automatic Audio’s aim was to transplant the home Hi-Fi experience to a large public space and they did exactly that. The speakers are diligently located at several points allowing visitors to be engulfed in the sound no matter if they are in the front or the back of the space.

While their kitchen is still in the works of opening, you can still enjoy the sexy atmosphere and cozy interior design. Whether you’re coming with friends or alone, this is the perfect place to sit at the bar and have a conversation or stand with a cocktail in hand admiring the wall of vinyl.

During winter, it becomes increasingly difficult to go out because all you want to do is stay in and hibernate. This feeling is justified, especially since NYC has been colder than the past few winters. However, when you finally muster the willpower to leave the comfort of your home, you want to spend that time wisely with great company while enjoying a worthwhile cocktail at a cozy spot. Witching Hour is exactly that.

This Bushwick cocktail bar is the quintessential winter outing. It offers cozy vibes, creative drinks, and community events. A friend and I went out for our usual “catch up and drinks,” while we were leaving one venue, we didn't want the night to end. My friend discovered this place just around the corner.

Entering the bar was quite the experience. The facade is adorned with beautiful vine plants, adding to its mystique. As you walk in, you’re greeted by stunning chandeliers, disco balls, and a bar that is just as enticing as the drinks they serve.

The menu features a variety of sumptuous crafted cocktails, wines, and light bites. If you are participating in Dry January, there’s something for you too. What I enjoyed most, after my very tasty and beautifully presented Calypso’s Secret cocktail, were the games.

There is an assortment of games, from UNO to Jenga and Cards Against Humanity. One of the many things I appreciate about the bar is their attention to detail, even in their restroom. It’s decorated in a whimsical storybook which decor with funtionality. It may seem like such a minute detail, but it truly tells so much about how much care and attention to detail takes place.

Witching Hour is the ideal date night spot and it’s fit for spending time with friends. It’s a gem that will guarentee a great night and will leave you with lasting memories. Take the stage for their Karaoke Mondays and be sure to visit their wibsite for additional events like live music and tarot card reading.
